Pick Your Perfect Pile: SDN

Welcome back to my favourite style session – Pick Your Perfect Pile! This time we get to deep-dive into one of the most mysterious acronyms of the carpet universe – the SDN! Well, OMG I hear you say, so let’s settle in and I’ll give you the DL, IMHO.

SDN stands for Solution Dyed Nylon, a type of synthetic fibre. While many carpet fibres are dyed after the carpet is made, SDN is different: the colour is mixed into the nylon while it's still a liquid, then extruded (pushed through tiny openings, a bit like squeezing toothpaste) to form the fibre itself. That means the colour isn't just sitting on the surface, it's built into every strand from the moment it's created. The result is a fibre that's incredibly resistant to fading (a big bonus given our sometimes harsh Australian sunlight) and much more resistant to staining, which is always good news if you have kids, pets, or messy dinner party friends (I won't name any names here...)

A big part of my selection process when working on my clients’ homes comes down to colour, and as the SDN technology enables such a wide range of colours, I find myself recommending it more and more. I also want my clients to be thrilled with their new interiors for years to come, and as nylon carpets are also known for their extreme strength and resilience, I know I am giving them sound, practical advice when I recommend an SDN carpet.

So, if you’re now thinking about an SDN, here’s a little FYI on my top picks for your home: https://www.carpetcourt.com.au/blog/pick-your-pile-SDN
